Artist's Comments

This is a mathematically exact diamond round cut in 3ds format.

Diffuse is black, fresnel reflection and refraction 100% white, IOR 2.417 for diamond.
Max reflection/refraction depth should be at least 8-10 or set exit color to white.

Whooaaaa... That takes precision to a whole new level. What method did you use to create that?

aww.. an' it's my birthstone ....

seriously, amazing precision, and it's so pretty

and I didn't comment on the swans, but .. also beautiful .. so cool and glassy ;-)

I used a few 8 sided cones in Rhino with the Blue Nile diamond ratios to figure out the angles. If the cut angles are off even slightly then it completely changes the look and you realize exactly why diamonds have to be cut this way.

Oooh, I see o.o I've tried to make one in 3D Studio using slice planes or booleans on a box, but neither work well :XD:

I've also done it in max but it takes longer to be precise enough since you have to actually do the calculations. You just boolean/intersect a few 8 sided cones. 2 on the base and 4 on the top at various heights and angles, ,22.5 and 11.25 degrees rotated.

The first cut would be an 8 sided cone 100x100 then clone and rotate 22.5. Drop the second cone height to around 85 and boolean/intersect. That's all there is to the 1st top cut and the base is just a mirror of that with the 85 height cone changed to around 98. The rest of the top is more of the same but it gets slightly more complicated.

I might do a max tutorial on it because it would be a good and fast modelling excercise. It takes about 5min in max compared to less than 60sec in Rhino.

I bet that took a very looong time to get it just right.

Excellent, you must have put a great deal of work into that!

True it would take a lot of time, but if your creating something based purely on mathematics its not hard at all. As long as you know and understand all of the math your using then you could create any shape easily it would just take a lot of time and effort but its not something that requires any artistic value. Nice diamond though but what I really want to see in reall life is for them to put a diamond made of white gold but paint it black then put it inside another diamond. Now that would look amazing, but I suppose seeing it in 3d will have to do for now.
